Animated from a popular manga that needs no explanation. Since the manga was 1990-1996 and TV anime was 1993-1996, so this is the after 26 years that we have seen TV anime.
There were both expectations and anxieties about this movie, as the original manga writer Inoue Takehiko was extensively involved not only in providing the original manga story but also in writing and supervising the script, and the match between Shohoku and Sanno Kogyo, which was not depicted in TV anime would be depicted in this movie.
Although the film was over 2 hours long, it seemed to go by very quickly.
The story is not composed of main story plus basketball match scene, but rather an elaborate story that is inserted like a flashback at various points in the match (Shohoku vs. Sanno Kogyo). Moreover, while the TV anime version was from Sakuragi Hanamichi's point of view, this film is depicted from Miyagi Ryota's point of view, and that alone changed the whole perspective of the story.
The motion-capture + 3DCG visuals are as powerful as live-action at times. Furthermore, deformation, which is one of the attractiveness of animation, was used a lot, and the depiction from angles that are impossible in live-action, the way large and small are drawn, the depiction of colors, and the depiction of time were very distinctive. If I had to watch such a thing on weekly TV series during my dinner time, I would probably stop eating. It was just fine and very satisfying to enjoy it on the big screen at once.
The production is by TOEI ANIMATION("DRAGON BALL") and DandeLion Animation Studio Inc.("The Girl in Twilight"), directed and written by Inoue Takehiko, with voice casts Nakamura Shugo("BLUE LOCK":Gagamaru Gin) as Miyagi Ryota, Kimura Subaru("Doraemon":Gian) as Sakuragi Hanamichi, Miyake Kenta("My Hero Academia":All Might) as Akagi Takenori, Kamio Shinichiro("emsemble stars!":Kiryu Kuro) as Rukawa Kaede, Kasama Jun("emsemble stars!":HiMERU) as Mitsui Hisashi, and others.
